Dimboola
Our Town is located in the Shire of Hindmarsh in the Wimmera region of Western Victoria, Australia, 334 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. Situated on the Wimmera River in the State of Victoria, the town of Dimboola was previously known as 'Nine Creeks'. Before the arrival of white people into the district, the Aborigines called the area Watchegatcheca which had the meaning 'Wattle Tree and White Cockatoos'. The name 'Dimboola' has generally been accepted to have come from the Ceylonese ~Dimbula meaning 'Land of Figs'. Dimboola's economy is predominantly rural, with wheat, sheep and timber being traditionally important, although there have been recent forays into alpaca rearing and olive plantations". There are also a number of new ventures such as the Coffee Roastery and Preserving Kitchen. There are a number of accommodation choices in Dimboola, Horsham and surrounding areas. There are also a number of great accommodation and camping options in the Wimmera including surrounding towns of Nhill, Horsham, Edenhope and Kaniva. Source http://www.dimboola.com.au/ |

Environment
The Wimmera River rises in the Pyrenees Ranges near Ararat, flows through Horsham and Dimboola and eventually drains into Lake Hindmarsh, a short distance beyond Jeparit. It is the longest land-locked river in Victoria. The river lies between the town and the Little Desert. The Wimmera River forms a vital link between several different wildlife habitats, such as the Little Desert and the Big Desert. There are several areas along the river where red gum and black box woodlands support an understorey of native species that have disappeared from other cleared areas. The variety of birds, plants and animals is extensive, so keep your eyes and ears open as you walk beside the river. You can also explore the local shops, gallery and visit the bakery or Cafes for lunch. Source http://www.dimboola.com.au/ |
